The Eddie Long Sex Scandal: Silence Doesn’t Make The Issue Of Church Molestation Go Away
The on-going (and ever-increasing) sex scandal of one of black America’s most prominent (and extravagant) “Mega-Preachers,” Bishop Eddie Long got the nation talking. They’re not just talking about the event itself. Black America is in a debate, on Facebook, on Twitter, on blogs and chat rooms, in editorial commentary as to whether we, as a community, should even be talking about this. Is that a question that we even have to ask? This is beyond gossip. The depth of the truth will never be known, but when photos of Bishop Long posing in body suits in his bathroom show up … Continue reading
Fueling Flames of Dissent Around Illegal Immigration: If Colin Powell Can’t Call It, Nobody Can
The debate around immigration is about to crank up. Starting with the revival of the DREAM act, which allows children of immigrants brought to the United States and raised in the public school systems to qualify for higher education financial aid-as a path to citizenship. It’s a good way to stick your toe in the water on this issue, but it really doesn’t get at the crux of the illegal immigration debate. The real issue here is what to do with those that keep coming, and coming and coming. Everyone understands the magnitude of the problem and the debate around … Continue reading
Playing With God: Terry Jones, Christian Radicalism and 15 Minutes of Fame
As our nation seeks to grapple with the vestiges of terrorism over the last decade, a new xenophobia has spread over the country tied to believe in God and believe in right. We assume God is love and love is right, but religious demagoguery has twisted what both God and right stand for. People who call themselves “men of Giod” are now playing with God and playing with spiritual emotions in very dangerous ways. A global crisis of a different sort blew over last week when a radical Christian propagator (I can’t even call him a preacher), Terry Jones, said … Continue reading
Is It Me, Or Are California Gubernatorial Candidates Ignoring The Black Community?
California’s on the brink of economic collapse, and we’re having a statewide election in less than three months. The major party candidates, Attorney General, Jerry Brown, and former Ebay CEO, Meg Whitman, are moving around the state campaigning for votes. Yet, the only time I’m hearing what either of them are going to do is on television, and most of it is negative. Whitman has bought her name I.D. and has pulled even with Brown (she’s ahead in some polls). I know Republicans usually don’t find their way to the hood (neither do Democrats, lately), but Jerry Brown should his … Continue reading
Glenn Beck’s Restoring Honor Rally On The Anniversary OF King’s “Dream” Speech: More A Symbol (of America’s Social Retreat) Than Substance
The conservative right continued its deafening drum beat to a return to yesterday with a rally this past weekend on the 47 anniversary of the most celebrated march date of the 20th Century Civil Rights movement. Called the “Restoring America’s Honor” rally, it was led by conservative talk show host, Glenn Beck, and featured him and the other star of the Tea Party movement, the conservative party’s latest high profile anti-intellectual, Sarah Palin. Both Beck and Palin have been touted as the new stars of the Tea Party, but Beck claims this wasn’t a Tea Party event—just most of the … Continue reading
