Did you know there is no African-American representation on the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees? There was an African-American, Angela Reddock who lost her election bid in 2009.

The lack of African-American representation partly explains the high prison incarceration rate of young black men in Los Angeles County. While African-Americans make up 7% of California’s population, we are 32% in California’s prisons. Under California’s draconian 3 Strikes Law, we are 43%.

There are three African-American women running for the LACCD. They are:

Gwen Walker running for Seat 1
Joyce Burrell Garcia running for Seat 3
Nicole Michelle Chase running for Seat 5

The African-American Community needs to know these women are running so they can get out and vote on March 8th. These women are very concerned about the state of black men in our community. They believe in education, not incarceration.

Let’s give them a chance to prove what they believe in. Elect to the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees - Joyce Burrell Garcia, Seat 3; Gwen Walker, Seat 1; and Nicole Michelle Chase, Seat 5.

I have to honor this brother for his sacrifice. His not allowing his blackness to be a hindrance. We as Blacks fail to realize we are a multifaceted community. We take must stop taking a minimal approach to everything. This brother hit the nail on the head; it's about what's right!!!

I completely agree. Although I am not a constituent, the salaries that these guys are making almost doubles the salary of many State Assembly Members. That is completely ridiculous. There definitely needs to be some sacrifice taken by ALL city Council Members because we are all in this together and unfortunately some feel that sine they are elected Public Officials they are entitled to earn almost 11 times what their constituents make. I am glad Wendy Gruel has given us access to the compensation plans for all public officials. Articles like this will make a difference! Good article Dr. Samad!
